Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

The Championships court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes will gain the right to question specific rulings made by the official, mirroring the protocol already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development comes just a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to review specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled the player was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its events.

Other Changes

A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been unsure if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
