"Do you know when you'll be speaking to the band?" a text reads. "My request was to ask if I can be their extra sister."

However, there remains a single issue: The sender also longs to be Haim's newest recruit. And we're in plentiful company. Multiple celebrated supporters have publicly coveted the role.

One thing is obvious a special quality is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their path doing sets at neighborhood delis with their family. Presently, they stand as multi-time Grammy Award nominees.

In the tradition of the most iconic ensembles, they're a tight-knit trio. Their videos frequently depict them marching in unison down the streets of Los Angeles. In concert, they jam with such boundless joy you can't help but think, "I want to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls approached us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I got a guitar'," says Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "That is the ultimate honor. That's an award in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire young girls to make music."

"So all is invited to be the honorary part of the family."

Award Milestone

The trio are connecting from their homes, where they're resting up after an major tour in support of their new album, I Quit.

They're currently reeling from the news it's been in the running for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first all-woman band ever in the running for the prize.

"I watch the announcements every year, so it sort of feels like The Truman Show when your name is read out," notes Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the nomination is deeply felt by the trio.

"We really set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a huge achievement," adds Alana. "But we're just grateful for the pioneers that inspired us."

Personal Turmoil and Humour

The record came out of a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music inhabits that odd liminal space where you're glad to be free, but not quite ready to start anew.

The themes follow endings and partings. The sisters seek love, but not the kind of love they've experienced. You can hear them determining in real life who they are becoming.

"I adore description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to actively work on blocking the noise and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That developed resilience demanded a new sound – more organic and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that started with the drum sound.

"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our memoir," jokes Alana. "I've said it, our albums don't start until we find the right drum sound."

Experiences and Collective Humor

The band's candor shaped the album's marketing, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic misadventures.

Someone left Este over a medical consideration. Alana told a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," says Alana. "So to be able to find humor in those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's therapeutic."

A Secure Future

It's not difficult sense a evolution in the band. Now, Haim are more certain of their place in the music world.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an international audience.

But the band will consistently be their primary focus.

"Me and my siblings have been making music since I was four," says Alana. "It feels as if nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really grateful we've made it and we're still kicking."
